How to get from the Airport to the Colchagua Valley, by car or public transport.
Planning a trip to the heart of Chilean wine country is the first step towards an unforgettable experience.
The Colchagua Valley, located in the O’Higgins Region of Chile, is an easily accessible destination, but knowing the logistical details will allow you to make the most of every minute of your getaway.
At Hotel Cava Colchagua, we want your only concern to be enjoying a glass of wine upon arrival. That’s why we’ve prepared this practical guide so you know exactly how to get here from Santiago, whether by air, bus, or your own vehicle.
-
From Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL)
If you’re arriving in Chile or traveling from other regions by plane, Santiago Airport is your starting point.
- Private Option (Recommended): The most comfortable way is to book a private transfer. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes (depending on traffic) and drops you off directly at the hotel reception. We work with various transportation providers. When making your reservation, inquire about the service cost, and we’ll coordinate it for you.
- Intermodal Connection: If you prefer public transportation, you can take an official airport bus. They depart every 10 to 20 minutes: Centropuerto or TurBus (fare between CLP $2,300 and $3,000) to the Universidad de Santiago Metro station (South Terminal). From there, follow the instructions in the “By Bus” section.
- Car Rental: More than 20 rental companies operate at the airport, including Econorent, Europcar, Sixt, Hertz, Localiza, and Chilean Rent a Car. They are located in the domestic (T1) and international (T2) terminals. This is the ideal option if you’re looking for complete independence to explore the different wineries in the valley during your stay. The average daily rate ranges from CLP $25,000 to $45,000 for compact or mid-size vehicles. This varies depending on how far in advance you book, the type of car (SUVs are more expensive), and the season. It is recommended to book at least two days in advance for better rates.
-
By Private Vehicle (Direct Route)
Traveling by car is fast and offers beautiful scenery as you venture into the central region.
- Route: Take Route 5 South towards southern Chile. Upon reaching San Fernando (approximately km 135), take the exit towards Route I-90 (Wine Highway) towards Santa Cruz.
- Travel time: About 2 hours and 15 minutes from downtown Santiago.
- Final Destination: Once in Santa Cruz, head towards the Barreales area. The Cava Colchagua Hotel is located on Camino Barreales s/n, just 3 km from the Plaza de Armas (main square).
- Key Directions: Upon arriving at the entrance to Santa Cruz, follow the signs to the boutique hotel area; our location guarantees absolute peace and quiet away from the urban noise.
-
By Bus (The Most Economical Way)
The bus system in Chile is very efficient and has frequent departures to our valley.
- Departure Point: Head to the Terminal Sur in Santiago (Metro Universidad de Santiago).
- Companies: The most frequent bus lines are Expreso Santa Cruz, Andimar, and Jet Sur.
- Time and Frequency: Buses depart approximately every 30-60 minutes. The trip takes about 3 hours.
- Arrival and Transfer: The bus will drop you off at the Santa Cruz Bus Terminal. From there, you can take a taxi or a local transportation service (Uber/Cabify) that will take you to the hotel in just 5 to 7 minutes.
