Sleeping in History:
The Architectural Challenge of Transforming Centuries-Old Barrels into Luxury Suites
Is it possible to merge winemaking heritage, cutting-edge design, and ultimate comfort in one place? In the heart of the Colchagua Valley, the answer is a resounding yes. Cava Colchagua stands as the only hotel in Chile—and one of the few in the world—that offers the incredible experience of staying inside real, century-old wine barrels.
What is now a sophisticated boutique hotel with 29 barrel-shaped rooms was born from a bold family vision and a monumental engineering and architectural challenge. Its founders, siblings Patricia and Francisco Ravanal, revealed the secrets behind the construction of this iconic resort and how the idea they had 13 years ago with their parents has become Hotel Cava Colchagua, one of the most important boutique hotels in the Colchagua Valley.
Rescuing Heritage: 45,000-Liter Barrels
The raw material for this project didn’t come from a quarry or a typical lumberyard, but from the region’s historic wineries, starting with those of the siblings’ grandfather, Teodoro Ravanal, who founded Viña Ravanal. These are gigantic oak barrels that, for over a century, held approximately 45,000 liters of wine each.
For Patricia Ravanal, the main purpose was always to honor the identity of her land:
“The rooms are made from barrels that have a history of when they were used to store wine. It’s a way of rescuing the traditions of Colchagua, its heritage, and transforming it into comfort. Initially, there were eight barrels from our grandfather’s winery, one of the first winemakers in the area, and from there we incorporated barrels from different wineries that speak of preserving our roots.”
Anatomy of a Barrel-Room: The Challenge of Verticality and Space
From an architectural standpoint, transforming a cylindrical wooden container into a comfortable and modern living space required a complete redesign. The biggest challenge was optimizing the interior volume without altering the iconic curved silhouette of the exterior barrel.
The Ravanal brothers’ ingenious solution was to design the rooms on two levels, making the most of the structure’s height. Depending on the suite’s category, the layout strategically plays with the spaces:
- Intelligent Duplex Layout: In configurations like the Premium Room, you enter through the lower level, where you’ll find a modern and luxurious bathroom with rustic-elegant finishes. An interior wooden staircase, perfectly integrated into the curve of the slats, leads to the upper level, which exclusively houses the master bedroom with king or queen beds.
- Thermal and Acoustic Comfort: Old oak is, by nature, an excellent insulator. However, to meet the standards of a top-tier boutique hotel, the structure was sealed and invisibly modified to incorporate climate control systems (air conditioning and heating), satellite television, and Wi-Fi connectivity, while preserving the mystique of the surroundings.
Francisco Ravanal emphasizes that the process required a great deal of creativity and absolute respect for the wood:
“Transforming the barrels was no easy feat… but we managed to develop two-story rooms that allow guests to dream of literally sleeping inside a barrel, combining the elegance of modern design with the rustic warmth of wood that has absorbed history for over 100 years.”
An Architectural Oasis that Embraces Nature
The design of the Hotel Cava Colchagua doesn’t stop at the barrels; the entire complex was conceived to harmonize with the landscape. The room terraces are strategically oriented towards the vineyards, allowing natural light to flood the spaces.
Furthermore, the surrounding area was meticulously transformed by the family. What was once a dense, impenetrable terrain has been reforested with thousands of trees, creating a native forest with tranquil trails, an interior lagoon with boat rides, and a Wellness/Spa area with hot tubs organically nestled beneath the grapevines of Viña Cava Colchagua, the heart of the property.
