The Face of Colchagua Tradition:

A Tribute to Don Raúl Ravanal on Father’s Day

There are men who not only inhabit a land, but who shape it, breathe it, and transform it into liquid history. In the Colchagua Valley, that man is Don Raúl Ravanal.

At 88 years old, with a serene face and confident smile, Don Raúl continues doing what has defined each day of his life: producing wine. He embodies the energy of traditions, that cultural matrix where work, effort, and respect for the land are passed down from generation to generation.

Today, celebrating Father’s Day, we want to pay tribute to this pioneering farmer, a true friend to his friends, and above all, the driving force behind a beautiful family.

Colchagua Roots: The Beginning of One of Don Raúl Ravanal’s Passions

Don Raúl is a true Colchagua native, a man full of anecdotes that reflect a Chile of heartwarming gatherings, horseback riding, and open wineries. He grew up watching his father, Teodoro Ravanal, master the valleys with the País grape, used to make the traditional “chichón” (a type of wine). As an enthusiastic young man and pioneer in the Lihueimo area, he personally planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon vines brought from Placilla, turning his winery into a legendary meeting place. In those days, wine was tasted in mate gourds and served in calfskin containers.

“Lands of wine and grain… We would set off, going to the hills, next to the slaughterhouse, the church, dressed as huasos (Chilean cowboys). There were no cars, but there were roads; everything was done by horse and carriage.” — Don Raúl Ravanal.

For Don Raúl, wine has always been a unifying force; a pretext for gatherings, impromptu celebrations, and true friendship among neighbors, farmers, and workers.

The Engineering Challenge: Sleeping in Century-Old Wine Barrels.

That same passion led Don Raúl, 10 years ago, to readily join the audacious project proposed by Patricia and Francisco: to found a hotel where guests could experience rest inside real wine barrels.

As detailed in our article about sleeping inside century-old barrels, it was no easy task. Don Raúl took the lead in rescuing gigantic 45,000-liter oak barrels that had belonged to the wineries of his own father, Don Teodoro. In other words, the place where guests sleep today itself tells a story and family legacy of more than 100 years.

The architectural challenge was colossal: designing two-story luxury suites while maintaining the verticality and mystique of the wood that had sheltered thousands of liters of wine for a century. A work of craftsmanship and faith that today allows families from all over the world to disconnect from the noise and connect with heritage.

A Bottled Tribute: The House Blend of Viña Cava Colchagua.

The daily tribute of his children to Don Raúl culminated in the creation of the house wine: an exclusive blend of 70% Carménère and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the hotel’s own land, which is now Viña Cava Colchagua. Guided by Don Raúl’s tireless curiosity, this wine is fermented in ancient cocciopesto amphorae (a Roman material made of brick and stone) and aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Each bottle is a bridge of affection that unites three generations. You can discover these grape varieties at the tastings held every Saturday.

“The greatest achievement in life is truly the sum of a path of constant work, daily effort, and always trying to do the right thing.”

— Don Raúl Ravanal
